Introductory Activities: What is a hero?
Lesson Three: People on the Heroes Who Inspire Them
(My hero: Martin Luther King)

 Time:
50 minutes

Grade level: 18-19, students

Materials Needed:
Power point (If it is not available teacher can use the textbook)
Handouts A

Objective:
1. To increase their understanding of the concept of heroes and heroism.
2. To build hero vocabulary.
3. To identify the actions of a hero.
4. To recognize the characteristics of a hero

Procedure:

1. Remind students about your discussion of the characteristics of a hero, reviewing some of the characteristics. (You might build a brainstorm map on the board, overhead, or computer that displays the characteristics or use the chart paper that participants did in the previous lessons)

2. Play a video from youtube showing racial discrimination against African American in America. Participants comment on the video that they saw.

3.  Present about a famous African American Activist "Martin Luther King" focusing of his background.

   4. Play video from you tube about the Civil Right movements which was leaded by Martin Luther King. Participants comment on the video.

   5. Play a video from you tube about Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream" subtitles in English. Participants comment on the speech.

   6. Participants will read a story written by a person and then identify the author’s hero. Ask students what they noticed about the story they read. Were they surprised by the choice of hero? Had the author  actually met her hero? Is it important to meet your hero? Why or  why not?

Assignment:
Explain to the students that each of them will read a story again. After that each of them will answer the worksheet given by the teacher.
